Galvin was born in Wellington, New Zealand, on March 27, 1967. Based on his educational background; he attended and graduated from both Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School and Victoria University. He also graduated from Toi Whakaari in 1989 with a Diploma in Acting.
Also, in 1992 Galvin auditioned for a role as Chris Warner in the upcoming Television New Zealand soap opera, Shortland Street alongside his flatmate Marton Csokas. Galvin won the role, with Csokas thereafter going on to play Leonard Dodds.

Galvin rose to fame when he starred as Jeremy in Highwater. High Water was a Polish historical drama TV series created by Jan Holoubek and based on Kasper Bajon’s work.
