Michael was born and raised in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, the son of Florence (Grovich) and Walter Smerconish. Smerconish is of Italian, Eastern European, and Yugoslav descent.

In 1984 he got enrolled and later graduated from the Central Bucks High School West, a public high school in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. In 1987 he then joined Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with his B.A. from Lehigh University. Michael later received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Smerconish was an MSNBC contributor and also a frequent guest-host of Hardball for Chris Matthews before joining CNN. He as well writes for the Philadelphia Inquirer and his columns have been rewritten in different newspapers across the country, like the Washington Post, Dallas Morning-News, Denver Post, and Boston Herald.
He became a radio and television commentator after experiences he had at his early age in Republican politics. While he was in college he was an advance man for Vice President George H.W. Bush. At the age of 29, he was later appointed by President George H.W. Bush to his sub-cabinet level position.
Before joining broadcasting as a full-time endeavor, he practiced law for ten years with James E. Beasley who was a legendary Philadelphia-based trial lawyer and studied at the Beasley School of Law at Temple University. He is currently working with counsel to the Philadelphia law firm of Kline & Specter.
After his graduation at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, he has remained a member of the Bar of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
