Miller was born in Los Angeles, California on 8 December 1967. She was raised by her father and her paternal grandmother. She attended Howard University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in journalism in 1989. She studied abroad in Kenya and Tanzania. She then enrolled at the University of New Orleans, and received her Master of Science (M.S.) degree in urban studies in 1997.

Michelle landed her first job as an intern for The Minneapolis Star- Tribune, and then for “ABC News Nightline” in Washington, D.C. As a reporter for the Los Angeles Times from 1989 to 1990, she wrote articles that appeared in the “South Bay” and “Valley” pages.
After a two-and-a-half-year stretch as a general assignment editor, producer, and news reporter for the Orange County Newschannel in Santa Ana, California, Morial moved to Columbia, South Carolina in 1993, where she continued to work as a news reporter and was named WIS-TV’s “Weekend Morning News” anchor.
In 1994, Morial moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where she worked as a news reporter and weekend anchor for WWL-TV, a CBS-News affiliate. She returned to host “The Early Edition” again in 1997.
From 1998 to 2001, Morial worked as an assistant professor of news and mass communications at Dillard University. In 2004, Michelle moved to New York City, where she worked as a National Correspondent and Substitute of the B.E.T.
