The billionaire American businessman Mitchell Rales bought the property in Potomac, Maryland, in order to build a home in 1986. Rales started in 1990 collecting art for that home. He decided to take on a philanthropic project which became the establishment of a private contemporary art museum following a near-death accident on a helicopter trip in Russia. It was built on land that was formerly a fox hunting club, Glenstone was named for the nearby Glen Road, and because of stone quarries located in the vicinity.

On October 4, 2018, the expansion was completed and in the same year, the museum was opened to the public. Glenstone was known to be free and open to the public via online booking. Glenstone continued to acquire adjacent properties including residential homes after the expansion.

Mitchell Rales was staffed by some recent college graduates through an “Emerging Professionals Program”, that took two-year in the program for aspiring curators and uninformed staff stationed in the galleries to answer questions from visitors about the art.
