Nick Reisman Biography
Nick Reisman joined The Capital Tonight team as a reporter and blogger in April 2011. Before that, he covered state government and politics for Gannett’s Albany bureau.
Before covering the Capitol, Nick was a staff reporter at The Post-Star in Glens Falls and interned at The Daily News in New York City. He is a 2007 graduate of the University at Albany majoring in history and journalism and native of Yonkers, NY.
Yonkers native Nick Reisman has called New York State his home his entire life. In 2004, Nick made the move a few hours north to the Capital Region and hasn’t looked back since. Nick considers the city of Albany a wonderfully walkable one – so, as a resident for nearly two decades, his advice is meant when he says that the Center Square neighborhood is the place to be on a beautiful day.
As a Capital Region political reporter, Nick loves knowing that, each day he comes to work, there will always be something new and important to share with his viewers.
News is about the unexpected, and Nick takes pride in being able to break that unexpected down into digestible and understandable stories for the members of his community.
Through the many stories Nick has covered, his coverage of the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York in 2011 has become one of his most memorable experiences.
The month leading up to the final decision was full of tremendous work and increasingly long days. However, witnessing history right in front of his own eyes made all of those hours worth it.
When Nick isn’t covering the top political stories to hit the Capital, you can find him relaxing at home with his cat, Penny, or enjoying one of the many diverse cuisine options in Albany.
When the warmer weather hits, it’s also a safe bet that you can find him somewhere outdoors, usually training for his next marathon.

WAS RAISE THE AGE ENOUGH FOR NY? SENATE DEMS SAY NO
Last year, the state legislature worked through the budget season to pass the Raise the Age law. But lawmakers aren’t stopping there — they’re pushing for reforms to other aspects of the criminal justice system. Nick Reisman reports.
ALBANY, N.Y. — Governor Andrew Cuomo this year is pushing a range of criminal justice reforms, but Senate Democrats want to go further. They’re backing a legislative plan that would end cash bail entirely, making it easier to get a speedy trial and require automatic discovery before plea deals are made.
“If you’re dealing with people who don’t want to make any changes then it’s really important for us to be clear and draw that line in the sand, and say ‘if we’re really going to do these things, these are the changes that are going to help us get to that end,’” said Senate Minority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
The governor’s proposals are more modest, like when it comes to ending bail for non-violent felonies and misdemeanors, but still face uncertainty with Republicans in the Senate.
Meanwhile Wednesday morning, Cuomo’s office released a report on the conditions of local jails, saying they must improve.
