Greenbaum started his career playing music in high school and created a band called Junk Band and Dr. West’s Medicine Show in the mid-1960s. The band released one album and had a minor hit with the novelty song called The Eggplant That Ate Chicago. After the band split up, Greenbaum went on and released his solo debut album, called Spirit in the Sky, in the year 1969.
Greenbaum released two other albums in the 1970s, but neither of them was commercially successful as compared to Spirit in the Sky. In the early 1980s, Greenbaum quit music to pursue a business career. Nevertheless, In the late 1990s, he returned to music and has continued to tour and record occasionally since then.
