Oleta Adams Career
She got her start in church music. Adams faced a lot of rejection before he gained her opportunity to perform. She moved to Los Angeles, California in the 1970s, where she had recorded a demo tape. Most music executives were therefore primarily involved in dance music rather than the popular style of Adams. Adams moved to Kansas City with the help of her singing mentor Lee Farrell where she played a number of local gigs.
In the early 1980s, she started her career with two self-financed albums that had modest success. Following her work with Tears For Fears, her label, Fontana Records, offered Adams a recording contract and resumed her solo career in 1990, assisted by Orzabal, who co-produced her new album, Circle of One. The song reached the top 5 in the UK and the US and became popular during the Gulf War conflict in 1991 as families of deployed troops in the region embraced the tune as a theme song.
In 1991, Adams also saw Fairwood Music (UK) Ltd., an independent music publisher, signing and contributing to the Elton John / Bernie Taupin tribute album, Two Rooms, on which her version of John’s 1974 hit “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” appeared. The version of Adams has been yet another top 40 success in the UK. Adams released her sixth album in 2001, All the Love, a return to a contemporary R&B / Adult sound.
The album was released again in Germany in 2004, with another title I Can’t Survive a Day Without You. Adams met Tears for Fears again in 2004 as she made a surprise guest appearance on stage at their concert in Kansas City, performing “Woman in Chains.” Adams released her first Christmas album with Oleta on 3 October 2006, entitled Christmas Time. Adams released their eighth album Let’s Stay Here on 21 April 2009.
Oleta Adams and Tears for Fears
In 1985, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, members of the English band Tears for Fears, discovered Adams as she played in a hotel bar in Kansas City, Missouri, while on a US tour. Two years later they asked her to invite her to join their band on their next record, The Seeds of Love, as a singer and pianist.
The album was released in 1989, and her first hit was the single “Woman in Chains,” performed as a duet by Adams and Orzabal and on drums with Phil Collins. In 1990, Adams embarked on a world tour with Tears For Fears, performing as the supporting artist at the beginning of each show, and remaining on stage throughout the set of Tears For Fears where she would provide piano and vocals.

Evolution, like its precursor, is composed of songs with a combination of jazz, blues, rock, and gospel. Evolution includes three cover versions: “Don’t Let Me Be Sad Tonight” song by James Taylor, “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel, and “Evolution” by Ivan Lins. Adams wrote six of the twelve tracks on the album, and it also features a song written by Diane Warren.
Oleta Adams Circle of One
Her third album Circle of One was released in 1990. circle of One was Adams’ first album to receive wide distribution; her two earlier albums (an untitled album in 1982 and Going on Record in 1983) were self-financed and only received the local distribution.

Her song Get Here is a pop ballad. Her fourth studio album Get Here (1988)’s title track became a moderate hit on the Billboard R&B chart on the heels of the massive first hit of the album, “Piano in the Dark.” The song was recorded by American vocalist Oleta Adams in 1990, making it a major international success that reached the top five in both the US and UK.
Oleta Adams Awards
