Hamlin was born on 30 October 1951, in Pasadena, California, United States. He went to Flintridge Preparatory School and afterward joined The Hill School, a private boarding school in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. While there, he played soccer and lacrosse and acted in the school’s musicals and plays.

Furthermore, he attended the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts where he studied and attended classes.
