Jones was born on October 13, 1942, in Los Angeles, California, to John “Pat” and Arminta Jones. The family moved back to North Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1945. His parents held two branches of Pat’s Super Market in the Rose City neighborhood of North Little Rock. Jones was a running back at North Little Rock High School, graduating in 1960. Later went to the University of Arkansas. At the university, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Jones was co-captain of the 1964 National Championship football team.
Jones rose to fame as the owner, president, and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He purchased the team from Bum Bright in 1989.
Jones was born to his father, J.W. “Pat” Jones (1920–1997), and his mother, Armenita Pearl Clark Jones (1922–2012) were married in 1941, and they owned two branches of Pat’s Super Market in the Rose City neighborhood of North Little Rock. His parents moved to Springfield, Missouri, after his graduation, where Pat was president and chairman of Modern Security Life Insurance Co. The company saw its assets increase from $440,299.76 in its first statement in 1961 to $6,230,607.
Jerry Jones Jr. is the younger brother of Cowboys executives Stephen Jones and Charlotte Jones Anderson and is the son of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. He then fired longtime general manager Tex Schramm a few months later, and assumed complete control over football matters. Jones quickly built a team that is often reckoned to be the best NFL franchise of the 1990s following a slow start under Jones and Johnson.
His efforts finally paid off in the 1992 season when The Cowboys won Super Bowl XXVII. They also won the Super Bowl XXVIII in the 1993 season, the following year. Barry Switzer replaced Johnson after his departure, and also went on to win Super Bowl XXX in the 1995 season. In 2003, Jones hired veteran coach Bill Parcells from retirement to become the head coach of the Cowboys.
For four seasons, he coached the Cowboys and helped them qualify for the playoffs twice, although the team was eliminated in the first round each time. Parcells finally retired in 2007 for good. As the Cowboys’ owner, the 2018 NFL season is Jones’ 30th. This duration is more than the number of seasons his predecessors’ tenures had combined.
Jones was one of two contributors considered for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017 alongside former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. He was nominated as a result of his contribution to the game, especially since taking over as the Dallas Patriots owner in 1989. Jones was inducted while Tagliabue, who was named among 15 finalists for the fourth time in 2017, fell below the 80 percent requirement and was not voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
