Nick Nolte, born Nicholas King Nolte on February 8, 1941, in Omaha, Nebraska, had a rather adventurous educational journey. He spent much of his childhood moving from town to town with his family. Eventually, they settled back in Omaha, where he actively participated in high-school sports. Nolte then attended Arizona State University on a football scholarship but flunked out after one semester.

Undeterred, he continued his education by attending several different colleges, although he never earned a degree. In the early 1960s, he landed in California and took up manual labor in Los Angeles.
