Union Station and other collaborations

In 1987, Alison Krauss requested that Brown join her band, Union Station where she played for three years with Krauss. She moved to Tennessee in 1990 and the following year, 1991, she was named International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Player of the Year. The 1990 collection I’ve Got That Old Feeling, which Brown played banjo on, won a Grammy grant.

In 1992, Brown became the bandleader for Michelle Shocked. Following this experience, Brown merged bluegrass with jazz and folk idioms, in a mode similar to those of Béla Fleck and David Grisman.

Compass Records

Brown and her husband, Garry West a bass player, formed their own record label, Small World Music in the early 1990s. This company inevitably prompted the launch of Compass Records in 1995, a globally recognized label, which has artists such as Colin Hay, Lúnasa, Catie Curtis, Victor Wooten, Martin Hayes, Darol Anger, Russ Barenberg, Jeff Coffin, and others.
