Deen was born on January 19, 1947, in Albany, Georgia, United States to Corrie and Earl Hiers. She spent her early childhood at River Bend, a small resort in Dougherty County owned by her grandparents. Her mother and grandmother ran the restaurant at River Bend and her father worked at a car dealership.

Shortly after Deen graduated from Albany High School in 1965, she married her high-school sweetheart, Jimmy Deen (divorced 1989).

Rise to Fame

Deen earned fame when she published her first cookbook, The Lady and Sons: Savannah Country Cookbook, in 1997, one year after opening The Lady and Sons restaurant in Savannah. She became famous outside the South by selling the cookbook on QVC, a home-shopping television network.

Paula Deen Restaurants

Deen opened a restaurant, The Lady & Sons in January 1996. Currently, her restaurant has been named, the ‘International Meal of the Year’. Paula also works alongside her sons who are managers.

Previously, Deen owned four casinos including Harrah’s Joliet in Illinois, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino in North Carolina, Horseshoe Southern Indiana, and Harrah’s Casino Tunica in Mississippi. However, the casinos were rebranded after Paula was removed from the Food Network.

Deen owned Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House in Savannah. However, the restaurant was closed abruptly on April 4th, 2014 for development. Later on, Paula opened her new restaurant and retail concept, Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen on April 27th, 2015.
