Ohno began his skating at the young age of six. His father enrolled him in such activities to keep him busy as he worked long hours shifts. When he was 13, he got interested in short-track speed skating after watching it during the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer. His father would drive him to short-track competitions throughout the northwest United States and Canada. He enrolled at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center even though he was underage to train full-time.

He won the 1997 U.S. Senior Championships overall title. He won a gold medal in the 1500 m, a silver in the 300 m, and came in fourth in the 500 m races becoming the youngest person to win the title. Apolo then joined Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center to train at the senior level even though he was 14 years old.

Under his achievements, he was the World Championship 2008 Overall and won the World Cup overall in 2001, 2003, and 2005. He also won 1st position on 2 Olympic Games, 8 World Championships, and 1 World Team Championships. He retired from the sport in 2010.
