Randy Cross is an American football analyst and former NFL right guard and center. Cross was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in July 2011.
He was born Randall Laureat Cross on April 25, 1954. He was born in Brooklyn New York. He is 65 years old as of 2019.
He is the son of Dennis and Rita Cross. Dennis was an American actor who had the lead role in the syndicated adventure series The Blue Angels
He is married to Patrice Cross.
He is the father of Brendan, Crystal, and Kelly Cross.
He was educated at Crespi Carmelite High School. After that, he joined the University of California, LA.
He was known as a high school shot put champion in the 1970–72 Southern California CIF when he was named champion of the event’s CIF California State Meet, beating future world record holder Terry Albritton as well as future WWF wrestling star Jim Neidhart from both Newport Harbor High School.
Cross was a selection from All-America at UCLA. As a junior, he assisted guide his squad over the top-ranking Ohio State to the 1976 Rose Bowl Championship. Cross started his career as a center but for his junior year, he was transferred to the Right Guard before playing both Guard and Center as a senior on a rare, rotating line of nine men.
Cross began on the 1st unit at RG on this revolving line and then shifted to Center when the next team struck the field. He was appointed All-America First-team in 1975. He was also a selection of First-team All-Conference in 1975 He was a starter in 28 of 34 career matches, including his final 23. Randy Cross (and many other linemen from UCLA) also played the school’s college rugby. In 2010, Randy was introduced to the Football Hall of Fame College.
In 1976, the San Francisco 49ers chose Cross in the second round of the NFL Draft; three Pro Bowl selections and three Super Bowl championships included his 13-year career. The last match of Cross as a player in 1989 was Super Bowl XXIII.
From 1976–78 he performed center and then guard position against 1979–87 before completing his career at the middle in 1988 in San Francisco. Randy joined the cast of the Miller Lite All-Star when he retired after Super Bowl XXIII making a series of famous advertisements for the brewing giant.
From 1989-to 1993, Cross was a member of the CBS Sports team covering the NFC playoffs and Super Bowl XXVI. Furthermore, he served as an analyst for the coverage of Super Bowl XXIV by CBS Radio Sports, filling in for Hank Stram when the latter was caught with laryngitis and had to leave the broadcast in the third quarter of the match.
He left CBS to join NBC Sports as a football analyst for NFL telecasts and a part-time commentator for Notre Dame football matches after their loss of the NFC bundle to Fox. He returned as a game analyst to CBS Sports in 1998 before serving as a studio analyst from 1999-to 2001 on The NFL Today. In 2002, he ultimately returned to his responsibilities as a match analyst.
Cross co-hosts Sirius NFL Radio show. In 2009, he became the color analyst for home matches at the US Naval Academy on CBS College Sports TV. From 1995-to 2012, along with Don Criqui, he was the former lead color commentator for pre-season matches for New England Patriots. Randy co-hosted the midday show “Rick and Randy” on WZGC 92-9 The Game a CBS radio station in Atlanta, Georgia before being released from the station.
