NSC Alumna Is Welcomed To Fox Sports North Broadcast Team

When UCF alumna Audra Martin, ’08 – R-TV/Broadcast Journalism – first learned she had landed her great new role with Fox Sports North, she had some people to call with the news. But she says the call to Dr. Tim Brown, her Radio-Television professor at the Nicholson School of Communication (NSC), came second only to the one she made to her parents. “I just knew he would get a kick out of it,” she laughed. “I just can’t say enough about my education and the professors at the Nicholson School,” Martin offered. “It was huge. And, that is the honest truth.” She then described how the R-TV program at NSC gave her the skillset, hands-on experience, advice, guidance, and thorough preparation she would need for most any situation encountered, in order to excel in her career path. The Fox Sports website article welcoming her explains, “Martin moves to the Twin Cities from Nashville, where she worked as a sports anchor and reporter at WKRN and sideline reporter for the Tennessee Titans. Prior to that role, she served as a sports anchor/reporter at WAAY-TV in Huntsville, Alabama, and as a sideline reporter for the Atlanta Thrashers. Martin also spent time working within the Atlanta Braves organization.” Among her other bragging rights, Martin was Miss University of Central Florida 2008, and while living in Florida she helped pass “Jeff’s Law,” a state law combatting online bullying. In 2015, she was even nominated for “Woman of the Year” by The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, giving her an opportunity to help raise money to battle blood cancer. Since Martin’s UCF graduation five years ago, the various sportscasting positions she’s held in both large and small markets in different regions have required different approaches, working with a variety of equipment, technology, and situations. “The broad and thorough skill set that a student gains in the Radio-Television program at Nicholson: that is absolutely what sets them apart on the job,” Martin emphasized. Martin’s move to Fox Sports North entailed immediate relocation from Nashville to Minnesota. “It happened so fast!” she said. “I got here and was working two days later!” During the phone interview, she was still unpacking at her new place. “I was from Chicago originally, went to UCF for college, then to Atlanta, then Alabama, and then Nashville,” Martin said. “I’ve been living in the South since 2004. So, I am facing readjusting to the cold!” She is thrilled to return to the Midwest, though, and that in her new position she has the opportunity to be covering two of the sports about which she is most passionate. A two-sport athlete herself from high school days, Martin’s first taste of reporting on professional hockey was in a part-time role with the Atlanta Thrashers. “And, that’s when I really knew, I did want a full-time sportscasting career,” Martin said. Once the Thrashers moved to Canada in 2011, Martin said it was a slow career process for a bit. She moved to Huntsville, gained more experience there, and later landed a job at the ABC affiliate station in Nashville. “Working in local sports was such a great experience,” she said. “I learned so much about becoming a better photographer, for example.” She added that throughout her career, colleagues have been impressed with the varied skills and background she received at NSC – in writing, editing, and other major areas. Then, she laughed, “I even learned to edit on tape!” She said that at the ABC affiliate in Huntsville, such skills’ diversity “was huge in helping me get that job.” Martin related what impressed her most at UCF: “The professors at the Nicholson School were so very honest about expectations of what is necessary to be successful in this profession. There weren’t any surprises. I knew exactly what I was in for.”
