As a child, Chris battled chronic ankle sprains as well as his adolescent years as a high school and college athlete. Chris later tried ten different surgeries in two decades to help with mobility and severe pain. Egert had his first surgery in 1998. Chris had his ankle replaced in 2015, unfortunately, he got an infection during the last round of surgeries that left him no choice but to get his leg amputated. The news reporter had an operation at Hennepin County Medical Center on Dec. 4, 2017, where he amputated the lower part of his left leg about six inches below the knee. The newscaster posted on Facebook that it will take him another three to four months to be fitted with a prosthetic leg and he will be back at KSTP desk to anchor the news. Nevertheless, on his road to recovery, Chris still experiences nerve and phantom pain.
