Almaguer was born on 11 March 1977, in Oakland, California, and raised in Berkeley, California. He went to Berkeley High School. He was a student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, but quit after his sophomore year and thereafter went to a community college in his hometown. While there, his aunt, a news anchor in the San Francisco Bay Area, recommended that he look into taking a class being taught by her co-anchor at San Francisco State University (SFSU).
Almaguer enlisted at the school and years later said he “fell in love with the broadcasting department, my classes, and my local news internship… I still remember being a college intern… sitting in a local newsroom and watching the buzz and energy in the room.” He graduated with high honors from SFSU with a degree in broadcast communications.

It is known that Miguel’s mother was also diagnosed with lung cancer despite a healthy lifestyle.
Miguel said that his mother was first diagnosed in 2013 with stage 2 lung cancer at age 65. Moreover, her diet was incredible citing the fact that she ate veggies. Furthermore, she exercised every day and wrestled with her nephews until they gave up. Most noteworthy, doctors said it was likely a gene mutation since she never smoked.
According to her case, there are different types of lung cancer, and some people who get the disease have no known risk factors, according to the American Cancer Society. As a result of Miguel’s mother’s surgery, the doctors had taken out a lobe in her lung but found cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and possibly the rest of her body.
Afterward, she underwent chemotherapy and radiation, but the doctor warned there was reason to be concerned. Fortunately, she didn’t die but survived. Currently, Miguel, his mother, and the rest of the family enjoy having normal lives back, and he loves every minute he gets with his mom.
