David relocated to California in 1969, initiating his acting journey by portraying Jim Bob, the second-youngest of seven siblings, in the made-for-television film The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971). With the adaptation of the film into The Waltons television series in 1972, Harper revisited his role and remained part of the series throughout its nine-season duration.
