Weinke is a one-time American football quarterback. He used to play college football at Florida State University and defeated the 2000 Heisman Trophy. Weinke was prepared by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He played for the Panthers for six seasons and furthermore spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals.

Weinke had a prosperous college career at Florida State, leading the Seminoles to a national championship in 1999 and beating the Heisman Trophy in 2000. He set several school records and was a consensus All-American in 2000. Inspite of his victory in college, Weinke was evaluated as a long shot to make it into the NFL due to his progressive age (he was already 28 years old when he was drafted).

Weinke made his NFL debut with the Panthers in 2001, serving as a backup to beginning quarterback Jake Delhomme. He used to play in six games that season, concluding 51.5% of his passes for 731 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions. He spent the next five seasons with the Panthers, especially as a backup, but did start several games during that time. He was released by the Panthers and marked with the San Francisco 49ers.
