Troy was born on 21 November 1966 and attended Henryetta High School, where he also played football. Furthermore, he earned All-State honors and won the 1983 Oklahoma high school state championship in Typing.
Immediately after completing high school, he joined the University of Oklahoma in 1984 where he went on to play college football. However, before heading to the University of Oklahoma, The New York Mets offered Aikman a contract out of high school, but he preferred to play American football to baseball.
He played his first full season in 1985 where he led the University of Oklahoma to some notable wins against big teams like the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Kansas State Wildcats, and the Texas Longhorns.

Aikman was first selected overall by the Cowboys in the year 1989 NFL draft, went to six Pro Bowls won three Super Bowls.
