Patrick Gilmore Interview
Q: You’ve been acting for quite some time. When did you first decide to get into acting?
Patrick Gilmore: My Dad bought the family a video camera when I was in elementary school. It became “my” camera & a passion. I explored my imagination with it, creating short sketches and films. When High School was coming to an end, I was asked what I was going to do. The only thing that I wanted to do was keep playing and imagining. I clumsily found my way into acting through Theater. It’s always been acting. I don’t have a Plan B.
Q: Which actors work had the most profound effect on you, as you started your career?
Patrick Gilmore: Harrison Ford. It all begins with Mr. Ford. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. The reluctant hero was more realistic & relatable to me than typical Hollywood fare. And, it wasn’t just his onscreen presence & work ethic, it was how Harrison conducted his private life. I wanted and still want to emulate that balance. Do yourself a favor, watch him in “The Mosquito Coast” (1986).
Q: Theater has been a part of you. How has your involvement on this platform helped you with film & television?
Patrick Gilmore: I don’t know if I’d have the same appreciation for acting if I had gone straight in to film & TV, instead of immersing myself in theater first. I now describe theater in film terms, “It’s one long, single take.” The rehearsal and the length of the play allows you the time to relax into the skin of the character. The stage developed my work ethic & passion for acting. It’s why you see so many actors return to theater.
Q: Let’s talk about the Netflix series, Travelers. How were you first introduced to the series and what made you want to take part in it?
Patrick Gilmore: I auditioned for Travelers like everyone else, and knowing Brad Wright created the show—well, I was in. I had worked with Brad on Stargate. Right before the second audition, Brad spotted me waiting in my vehicle and knocked on the window. It was then he told me the part was actually written for me. “No pressure.” He said.
Q: On the show, you play the role of David Mailer. What’s your impression of David and what do you enjoy about playing him on screen?
Patrick Gilmore: I obviously took to David’s language immediately, before I knew he was written with me in mind. Our timing is so similar, though my humor is a little more self aware. I will say this about David, he has infinitely more patient than me. I try to emulate his trust in people, though Patrick is a much more cynical person.
Q: What can viewers expect to see from David and the rest of the cast in this new season?
Patrick Gilmore: Season 1 now feels like an introduction. As Season 2 starts, we know these people now, we care about them. So everything that begins to happen, has more gravity. And the writers spare no one as they world build. This show has such depth.
Q: You’re also on the DirectTV series, You Me Her. What do you enjoy about your role on that show and what can we look forward to seeing when the show comes back for another season?
Patrick Gilmore: You Me Her has been a fun surprise for me. The role of Shaun started off as a quick & colorful one and has become kind of a sweet & odd character. Shaun is a blast because you never know what’s going to come out of his mouth. I don’t think he even knows. I don’t want to give too much away, but you’ll get your fill of Shaun in Season 3 of YMH. His fun ridiculousness is in it a lot.
Q: If you weren’t working on your career as an actor, what would you end up doing instead?
Patrick Gilmore: If I wasn’t an actor I’d still have to be around the arts. Most likely, I’d find a way to be in music. Being creative is like yoga for the soul. (I just rolled my eyes too.) But it’s true. You know that feeling when you stretch in the morning, tingly and full of oxygen…that’s what being creative feels like to me. It’s life blood. It’s oxygen.
Q: When it comes to fashion, what styles appeal to you most?
Patrick Gilmore: I’m a man of simple tastes. Jeans, T-shirt, and baseball cap. If I could, I’d live in a swim suit because that would assume I had access to a lake or a pool. But if you INSIST that I wear clothes, my fashion comes to life in the Autumn. Earth tones, scarves, fun jackets, like the cover of a Bob Dylan album.
Q: We look forward to seeing how things will develop on Netflix’ Travelers and DirectTV’s You Me Her. What other projects do you have coming up?
Patrick Gilmore: The two shows have kept me busy and I hope will continue to do so. In the meantime, any other projects I do will be a tad selfish and “extra curricular.” Read more, finish my Pilot’s Licence, a photography course, naps, learn how to cook a turkey. We work, so we can afford the time grow.
