King first wrote for The Cincinnati Enquirer, a morning daily newspaper published by Gannett in Cincinnati, Ohio, f0r five years, from 1980 to 1985. He then joined Newsday the same year he left The Cincinnati Enquirer and wrote for four years till 1989.
He then got a job at Sports Illustrated in the same year, and his career took off for 29 years, where he resigned from the magazine in 2018.
While writing for Sports Illustrated, King got gigs in the sports world, both on television and on the radio. In 2002, he joined the HBO show, Inside The NFL, as an editor and reporter. He then joined the NBC show, Football Night in America, alongside; Bob Costas, Cris Collinsworth, Sterling Sharpe, and Jerome Bettis.
He served as an insider reporter and highlighted major topics of the day in football. He was appointed by the governor of New Jersey to investigate and report on steroid and human growth hormone use in high-school athletics.
From 2008 to 2011, King co-hosted The Opening Drive on Sirius NFL Radio with Randy Cross and Bob Papa. He has written five sports journals at the time of his career. In 2009, he was awarded the Dick McCann Memorial Award for his work in professional football. Other than that, he has been named National Sportswriter of the year three times during his career.
