Phillip Ingram Biography
Phillip Ingram is an American musician best known as one of the founding members of the Motown Group “SWITCH” formed in December 1976.
He was a faculty member at the California College of Music (CCM) in Pasadena, California, and taught vocal lessons twice a week with their Vocal Arts Program.
Phillip Ingram Career
In 1976 Ingram together with Greg Williams, Jody Sims, Bobby DeBarge, Tommy DeBarge, and Eddie Fluellen, formed a band called Switch.
The band was signed to the Gordy subsidiary of Motown Records in May 1977. They went on to record five albums for the label. Ingram shared vocal duties with Bobby DeBarge. Their first album went platinum. It had hits like “They’ll Never Be”, and “I Wanna Be Closer.”
The band’s second album went gold and included hits like “Best Beat In Town” and “I Call Your Name.” In 1984, Ingram began writing for various artists and working with various artists, films, and commercials.
After the Debarge brothers left the band in order to mentor their younger siblings in the group DeBarge, Ingram left to pursue a solo career too. Switch took on new vocalists and musicians: singer Renard Gallo, Gonzales Ozen, and bassist Phil Upchurch Jr.
They signed with Total Experience and recorded a final album Am I Still Your Boyfriend in 1984, breaking up later that year.
Former lead singer Bobby DeBarge died of AIDS-related complications on August 16, 1995, at age 39. The band has since reunited. It has featured original members founder Williams, Fluellen, Ingram, original sessions/on stage guitarist Michael McGloiry, and new lead vocalist Akili Nickson.
