7 things you need to know about Rachel Riley
Source: tv.bt.com
1. She’s divorced
After competing on Strictly Come Dancing, Rachel and her husband of 16 months Jamie Gilbert divorced. She is currently dating her Strictly dance partner Pasha Kovalev.
“Strictly is a very intense bonding experience. We became close friends and we spent a lot of time practising together. We got to know each other really well. It’s not the ideal place to get together with someone really – they see you at your worst, and we didn’t get together until after the show.
“I was with Jamie for nine years, and in the end we just became friends which I think happens to a lot of couples. He was great with everything, and it helps that we’re both very level headed. We’re still friends now.”
2. She found Strictly Come Dancing tough
As well as learning to dance, Rachel was trying to film two other TV programmes at the same time as Strictly – Countdown and The Gadget Show.
“I didn’t have a day off for four months,” she revealed. “And sometimes got just three hours sleep. I went through so much Red Bull, just to concentrate.”
She even had cognitive behavioural therapy to try and combat the stage fright that she felt while she was on the show.
“The guy was brilliant: I didn’t realise I was a perfectionist, because I didn’t want things to be perfect and thought that’s what a perfectionist was. But it’s more that you are never satisfied with yourself,” she revealed.
3. Countdown is only her second job
After leaving Oxford University with a degree in maths, Rachel got a job as an analyst on a price comparison website. However, she was only there a few months before she landed the job on Countdown. Which, she says, was by accident!
“I never did any public speaking at school, never did any performing. I just applied for Countdown because I liked the numbers game and used to watch it as a kid,” she revealed. “I didn’t have anything to lose. It was the same thing with applying to Oxford: I’d never known anyone who’d been to Oxford, but didn’t have anything to lose.”
4. She loves it when there’s a rude word
“It’s one of the reasons people like Countdown,” she says. “The funniest ones for me – because you get such a range of people who watch, from kids to students to OAPs, stereotypically – are words like ‘growler’. Where old people won’t know there’s a funny connotation to it, but everyone around my age is going to be screaming. There’s definitely an underlying level of filth to Countdown.”
5. She’s a savvy shopper
“If I need something, I’ll use websites like Topcashback.co.uk and MoneySavingExpert.com to see if there’s a voucher,” revealed the 29-year-old recently.
“We have Martin Lewis on Countdown quite a lot and he’s always talking about ways of saving money and getting cashback. If it’s available, then why not?”
6. She won’t be in a bikini on TV anytime soon
“I’ve had inquiries for things like TV show Splash, where people go out in front of the whole nation in a bikini. But I think bikinis are just for the beach,” she said.
“I enjoy things that are relevant to me, like maths and science and Countdown and I don’t want to offend our viewers. Hopefully, I keep it above taste level. Besides, other people are better to model than me.”
7. She doesn’t see herself as a sex symbol
“I don’t really see myself like that and it doesn’t make me dress differently,” she explained. “It’s always flattering when you get compliments but it’s more of a measure of who you are at the time than anything else.”
