Ray Nagin is an American one-time politician who was the 60th Mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, from 2002 to 2010. As a Democrat, Nagin became popular known in 2005 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Nagin was first elected as mayor in March 2002. He was re-elected in 2006 when the election was maintained with at least two-thirds of New Orleans citizens still replaced after Katrina struck. Term-limited by law, he departed office on May 3, 2010.

Nagin was born June 11, 1956, in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. He was raised in the Seventh Ward, a predominantly African-American neighborhood. His father was a janitor at City Hall, and his mother worked as a manager at a Kmart in-store restaurant. Nagin attended St. Augustine High School and O. Perry Walker High School, where he played basketball and baseball.
He enrolled at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama, on a baseball scholarship, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1978. After graduating from Tuskegee, Nagin worked as an accountant for General Motors in Detroit, Michigan.
He then moved to Dallas, Texas, where he worked for Associates Corporation, a telecommunications company. In 1985, Nagin moved back to New Orleans to work for Cox Communications, a cable television company. He eventually became vice president and general manager of Cox Communications in southeast Louisiana.
