Richard Wershe Jr. Crime involvement & becoming an FBI informant
Wershe Jr. got involved in the crime world through a small criminal named Terrence Bell, with whom his sister was in a relationship at the time. Wershe Sr. quickly lost his hold on both of his children. Dawn was doing crack cocaine while Wershe Jr., accompanied by Bell, began burglaries. The brothers of the Curry, Leo ‘ Big Man’ Curry, and Johnny ‘ Lil Man’ Curry were twins. They controlled drug operations in the neighborhood of Wershe Jr. in the East Side of Detroit. Wershe Jr. first got to know Rudell “Boo” Curry, Leo’s younger brother, and Johnny. He gained access to the Curry brothers and their lavish lifestyle through him. The 1980s witnessed America’s drug war fighting a new enemy, crack cocaine. Initially, Wershe Sr. had contacted the FBI to seek help with his daughter, who had a severe drug problem by then. In the summer of 1984, FBI agents came to their home and began showing pictures of the Curry brothers and their associates. His father did not recognize them, but Wershe Jr. did. He soon became an informant to the FBI. He was at the time only 14 years old. The Wershe’s could hardly meet the ends. However, after Wershe Jr. became an informant of the FBI, money started to flow in as they paid him for information. He was making more money than most of the adults he knew. His connection with the Curry family greatly helped him in his quest to gather more and more information about drug activities in his neighborhood and the city as a whole. Johnny was one of the most powerful drug lords in Detroit’s underworld, and Wershe Jr. constantly provided information about him and his criminal empire. Despite his age, he proved invaluable to the FBI. He spent time with the brothers on a regular basis and they did not suspect anything. He was too young for them to be an informant. He was skipping school by day when he turned 15 and spending the nights at the clubs, gathering information for the FBI. The authorities have been equally active. Based on the information provided by Wershe Jr., they cracked down on drug dealers and seized hundreds of weapons, kilos of cocaine, and millions of dollars. The biggest confiscation took place on the East Side, where the Curry brothers were in charge. White Boy Rick was the most productive informant for the agency at the time, according to retired FBI agent John Anthony. When he was 15, one of Johnny’s associates at the latter house shot at Wershe Jr. in the stomach. Wershe Jr. asked the man to call him an ambulance. He didn’t, but his girlfriend arrived at the house soon and quickly called for help after realizing what had transpired. Wershe Jr. survived the ordeal and it appeared that he did not reveal anything to the authorities to the Curry brothers and their associates. This gained him “street cred” in their eyes, and he grew even closer to them in the months that followed. Wershe Sr. didn’t want him to work with the FBI again after he was shot. Wershe Jr. said that although his father knew he was still meeting with the FBI, he never realized how far the agency had got him involved with the Curry brothers. Johnny went to Las Vegas, Nevada in April 1985 to watch the boxing match between Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns. The FBI sent Wershe Jr. there with a fake I d and $ 15,000 to continue doing his job as an informant. He was accompanied by his sister. Finally, the FBI arrested the Curry brothers and many of their associates and set up cases against them with the information Wershe had given them over the years. Johnny and other members of his organization each served 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to several charges.Richard Wershe Jr. Career as a dealer of drugs
The FBI was also done with Wershe Jr. after the collapse of the criminal empire of the Curry brothers. However, he has already accustomed to the affluent life that the FBI’s steady money allowed him to lead. At the time, he essentially had two choices, going back to school or hitting the streets. He chose the latter and became a drug dealer. Wershe Jr. was a “weight man” and not a full-fledged kingpin. He bought cocaine directly from a Miami – based supplier named Art Derrick. He had an affair with the wife of Johnny, Cathy Volsan, who at the time was an influential figure in Detroit, being Mayor Coleman Young’s niece. There was even an attempted assassination of former professional hitman Nathaniel Craft on Wershe Jr., who later revealed that he was employed by police detective Gil Hill to kill Wershe Jr. to prevent him from talking about police corruption in Detroit. During this period, he earned about $30,000 a month. Wershe Jr. was arrested in May 1987, when he was 17 years old, and charged with possessing eight kilograms of cocaine. He was later sentenced to life imprisonment. His case was revisited in 1998 and he was given the opportunity to parole.Life in Prison & Years Later
Richard continued to help the FBI after being imprisoned and played an instrumental role in Operation Backbone, resulting in the arrests of several corrupt Detroit police officers. He was allowed to parole unanimously in June 2017. Despite that, he was relocated to the Florida State Prison to serve another sentence for his involvement in a car theft ring. Currently, Wershe Jr. is being held in Lake Butler, Florida State Prison at the Reception and Medical Center, and is scheduled to be released in 2020. He has three kids, including a son called Richard Williams.Richard Wershe Jr. News
Richard ‘White Boy Rick’ Wershe Jr.’s prison release date moves up
Adopted from: www.freep.com Published on: Dec. 27, 2018Richard ‘White Boy Rick’ Wershe Jr. could be getting out of prison a year sooner than expected after serving more than three decades for drug charges in Michigan and racketeering charges in connection with a stolen-car scheme in Florida.
According to an updated Florida Department of Corrections Inmate Population Detail page, Wershe Jr., 49, is now scheduled to be released on Nov. 25, 2020. He initially was scheduled to be released in 2021.
“His original release date was 4/20/2021, but it was recently updated to reflect the amount of gain time accrued during his sentence,” Patrick Manderfield, press secretary for the FDOC, told the Free Press in an email.
Wershe is serving time in the Putnam Correctional Institution for men in East Palatka, Florida, according to FDOC inmate records.
Wershe’s long-documented notoriety and ties began when he acted as an FBI informant at 14, but was later arrested in 1987 for stashing 8 kilos of cocaine and nearly $30,000 at 17.
He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for possession with intent to deliver more than 650 grams of cocaine and was put into the custody of the Michigan Department of Corrections.
He remained incarcerated in Michigan for nearly 30 years, housed at the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee, until the 10-member Michigan Parole Board voted unanimously to release Wershe on July 14, 2017.
A month later, Wershe was transferred into the custody of the FDOC and sent to serve time in Florida. In 2006 he was sentenced in Florida to five years on two 1999 felony charges for racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering. FDOC records show he began serving that sentence on Aug. 22, 2017.
Wershe’s racketeering charges stemming from his attempt to help his sister, Dawn Wershe, make money by buying and selling cars in Florida some of which were stolen.
According to a Free Press report from July 2017, prosecutors agreed not to file charges against Wershe’s sister and mother in connection with the case in a plea agreement and he was put in a federal witness protection program in a Florida prison after he cooperated with the FBI agents to bust corrupt police officers while serving time in Michigan for a drug crime.
Wershe’s complicated string of charges and complex family dynamics has been unpacked by a number of documentaries, one directed by filmmaker Shawn Rech who debuted “White Boy” at the 2017 Freep Film Festival; and another 2018 feature film, which starred Matthew McConaughey as Wershe’s father.
