McElhenney earned his first major role with a small part in The Devil’s Own, followed by minor parts in A Civil Action Wonder Boys and Thirteen Conversations About One Thing although his role in The Devil’s Own was left out of the final cutting. At the age of 21, McElhenney’s debut screenplay was chosen by writer-director Paul Schrader and attached to direct, before its completion, after one year of editing and rewriting. Originally based in New York City after graduating from high school, McElhenney moved to Los Angeles at the age of 25. In 2004, he was waiting tables for acting jobs and met Glenn Howerton. through his agent, and Charlie Day in New York while shooting a horror film.
His proposal for a comedy, starring himself, Howerton and Day, was shot on a $200 budget and set up on a variety of cable networks. Upon getting offers from many of the networks, McElhenney chose to sign with FX because they gave him more creative freedom.
