Robert joined the Navy SEALs on 29 January 1996, where he reported to Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S) at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado and graduated from BUD/S class 208. He initially worked as an Operator and later became the Team Leader. Among the members of that unit was Matt Bissonnette, who along with another Seal Team 6 member, O’Neill, claims to have fired the fatal shots.
In May 2011, the US Navy Seal Commandos conducted a special operation on a fortified compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. This operation was overseen by retired Admiral William McRaven. O’Neill came out publicly to take credit for the killing of Osama bin Laden, a decision that did not sit well within the Navy Seal ranks.
Jonathan Gilliam, a former Seal, condemned the actions and motives of Mr. O’Neill. “It’s ridiculous for O’Neill to claim the credit for the fatal shot as we probably never will know and don’t need to know,” said Mr. Gilliam, a security consultant, noting that his views reflected the views of many Seals with whom he had spoken.
O’Neill signed a deal in February 2019, for a movie production based on his autobiography; The Operator: Firing the Shots that Killed Osama bin Laden and My Years as a SEAL Team Warrior. The rights for the movie were obtained by Universal Pictures and Broadway Video.
