Spencer did an entire load of news, weather, and sports for the weekend newscasts, his first exposure to weather casting. After that, Spencer would venture to Clarksburg, WV also in 1989, where he became the 11 p.m. co-anchor and producer. Spencer filled in for the late, great Mike Simons on the weather.

His next stop was at WYVN TV in 1991 in West Virginia too, in the beautiful Eastern Panhandle where he also produced and co-anchored the 11 p.m. News Yes, he also filled in on the weather when needed. In 1992, Spencer took a position as a weekend weather anchor and weekday news reporter at WHOI TV in Peoria, Illinois. Six months later, West Virginia would come calling again.

He arrived at WOWK first as a Charleston nightside reporter. A few months later, alongside morning anchor Samantha Kozsey, he was tapped to be the morning weather anchor. A year later, on the evening news called “Spencer’s Neighborhood Spotlight,” Spencer convinced the bosses to let him create his own segment, which was pretty much Spencer rolling around the area showcasing anything and everything people like to do for fun.

Years later, the retiring Chief Meteorologist Dave Parker asked Spencer to take over and accepted, went back to meteorology school, practiced on the job, bustled a few predictions, learned a lot, and ultimately received the coveted Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association.
