Beginning with a role on A World Apart in 1970, she went on to play Lenore Moore Curtin Delaney on the daytime soap opera Another World for five years. Sullivan took over the role of Judith Barcroft from 1971 to 1976. She portrayed Ann, Charlton Heston’s girlfriend, a new character created for the television adaptation of the film Midway (1976).
In 1977, she portrayed Dr. Elaina Marks opposite Bill Bixby in the Incredible Hulk pilot, and the following year, she portrayed Poker Alice opposite James Garner as Bret Maverick in The New Maverick. Sullivan also appeared in the episode “Final Judgement” of Barnaby Jones (01/26/1978).
In the television drama Rich Man, Poor Man Book II, she portrayed Maggie Porter. She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Dr. Julie Farr in Having Babies, which was made into two television movies and later a short-lived weekly series in 1978.
She was a panelist on Match Game for a week in December 1976, both on CBS and in syndication. She played head waitress Lois Adams on the sitcom It’s a Living in 1980. Sullivan was cast as Maggie Gioberti in the CBS primetime soap opera Falcon Crest in 1981, replacing Samantha Eggar, who had appeared in the pilot. Maggie became Sullivan’s most prominent role to date after the series became a hit.
She was a regular on the show from 1981 to 1989, and she was nominated for three Soap Opera Digest awards during that time. When Sullivan decided to leave the series in 1989, she had appeared in every episode up to that point (207 of the 227 episodes produced).
Sullivan made her season nine debut in the first episode when her character drowned. Following Falcon Crest, Sullivan appeared on The George Carlin Show, co-starred on the short-lived political drama The Monroes in the mid-1990s, and had a supporting role in the film My Best Friend’s Wedding (as Cameron Diaz’s mother) (1997).
From 1997 to 2002, she portrayed the snooty country-club matriarch Kitty Montgomery on Dharma & Greg. Sullivan was reunited with actor Mitchell Ryan (who played her husband Edward) on the series, with whom she had previously worked on Having Babies.
She played Nancy Lombard, Faith’s therapist, in four episodes of Hope and Faith’s third season. On the animated series Justice League Unlimited, Sullivan played Queen Hippolyta.
