Nicole and her identical twin brother Jonas were adopted at birth by Kelly Maines (mother) and Wayne Maines (father); one of their biological parents was Kelly’s second cousin. They grew up in Portland, Maine though they spent their early years in Gloversville, New York.
At birth, Maines was identified as a male and said she knew she was misassigned to gender as young as three. After the character, Nicole Bristow on the Nickelodeon series Zoey 101 Maines says she chose the name, Nicole.
