Lane was born Diane Colleen Lane on January 22, 1965, in New York City, New York, United States of America. She attended and graduated from the Hunter College High School and City College.
At age 6, Lane landed her first acting role in La Mama Experimental Theatre Company’s 1971 production of Medea in which she played Medea’s daughter. From then until 1976, she performed with La MaMa, E.T.C. in New York and toured with them abroad.
Some of the plays she performed in include The Trojan Women, Electra, Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Woman of Szechuan, Federico García Lorca’s Blood Wedding, Paul Foster’s The Silver Queen, and Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Most of these plays were directed and adapted by Andrei Șerban and Elizabeth Swados.
From 1976 to 1977, Lane appeared in The Cherry Orchard and Agamemnon at New York’s Vivian Beaumont Theater. After participating in the first production of Runaways when it was off-Broadway, Lane took a decade-long hiatus from theatre. In 1989, Lane returned to the stage to play Olivia in Twelfth Night at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Lane took another hiatus from theatre until 2012 when she starred opposite Finn Wittrock in Sweet Bird of Youth at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago (directed by David Cromer). Lane then returned to New York theatre and starred off-Broadway in Bathsheba Doran’s The Mystery of Love and Sex in 2015 (alongside Tony Shalhoub) and in Broadway’s revival of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard in 2016 (alongside Joel Grey and Harold Perrineau).
Diane was born to her parents Colleen Leigh Farrington (mother) and Burton Eugene Lane (father) in New York City, New York. Her father was a Cab driver, and a drama coach, and served as a professor of humanities at the City College, while her mother was a Playboy model and nightclub singer. Her parents divorced while she was still a child and she was raised by her mother until she was six.
Later her custody was given to her after her mother moved to Georgia. Her mother abducted her and took her back to Georgia. Lane and her father sued Farrington in court and six weeks later, Lane returned to New York City and started living with her father. Liane didn’t talk to her mother for the next three years, however, they reconciled later and are in a good relationship at present.
Lane has been married twice throughout her life. She was first married to Christopher Lambert, an actor, novelist, and producer. The couple tied the knot in October 1988 in an adorable wedding ceremony held in Santa Fe, after they met in Paris while she was promoting her movie, The Cotton Club. They were blessed with a daughter named Eleanor Jasmine Lambert, who was born on September 5, 1993. They later divorced in 1994.
Diane was also married to Josh Brolin, an American actor, on 15 August 2004 in a lavish wedding ceremony, but later divorced in February 2013 with an undisclosed issue.
