Long was born on January 6, 1960, in Somerville, Massachusetts, and was raised in Charlestown, Boston, mainly by his maternal grandmother and uncles. Long went to Milford High School in Milford, Worcester County, Massachusetts, and is a member of the Milford Hall of Fame.

Long then attended Villanova University, and earned a degree in communications. Also, he had a career in college football, As a freshman, Long began every game and had 99 tackles.
