Dance was born on October 7, 1940, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was brought up in Lynchburg, Tennessee, Dance considered becoming a doctor but changed his mind after happening upon a grisly motorcycle accident in the early 1960s. He then turned his focus to contending in bass tournaments.

The program initially began on WHBQ-TV, then the ABC affiliate in Memphis, in 1968. He dropped out of college and started competing in bass tournaments. Dance quickly rose through the ranks of the bass fishing world. He won multiple tournaments and titles, including the Bass Angler of the Year award in 1970.

Rise to Fame

Dance rose to fame in the late 1960s with his television show, Bill Dance Outdoors. He obtained his first cap from their coach, Doug Dickey.

He then turned his focus to competing in bass contests. A fishing lure manufacturer that sponsored him suggested he should start a TV show to promote the product. The program initially started on WHBQ-TV, then the ABC affiliate in Memphis, in 1968.

Dance’s autograph look includes sunglasses and a Tennessee Volunteers baseball cap. He received his first cap from their coach, Doug Dickey, in the late 1960s. He lives in Eads, with his wife, Dianne. With fellow fishermen Roland Martin and Jimmy Houston, he started the company Th3 Legends to sell signature products
