Manchester was born on February 15, 1951, in the Bronx, New York City, into a musical family. Her father, David Manchester, was a bassoonist for the New York Metropolitan Opera for three decades. Her mother, Ruth Manchester, was one of the first women to design and found her clothing firm, Ruth Manchester Ltd.
Manchester began singing at a young age and learned to play the piano and harpsichord at the Manhattan School of Music. At the age of 15, she began singing commercial jingles and became a staff songwriter at Chappell Music while attending Manhattan’s High School of Performing Arts. She also studied songwriting at New York University with Paul Simon.
In 1971, Manchester became a backup singer for Bette Midler, and she also performed on the Manhattan club scene. She released her debut album, Home to Myself, in 1973, and her career quickly took off.
Rise to Fame
Manchester rose to fame in 1973 after the release of her debut album, Home to Myself, in which she co-wrote many of its songs with Carole Bayer Sager. In 1975, her album Melissa produced her first top-ten hit, “Midnight Blue”, which relished 17 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
