Zohra Lampert was born on May 13, 1937, in New York City to Russian-Jewish immigrants. She was the only child of Rose and Morris Lampert. Her father worked in a hardware store, and her mother was a homemaker.
Lampert attended the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan, where she studied dance, music, and art. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at the University of Chicago, where she studied English and theater.
While at the University of Chicago, Lampert joined the Playwrights Theatre Club, which was established by the theatrical producer David Shepherd. She appeared in several productions with the club, including Bertolt Brecht’s “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” and Jean Anouilh’s “The Lark.”
