Polinsky started his professional wrestling career in 2000 at the age of 16. He wrestled for various independent promotions under the ring name Sterling James Keenan. He won several championships during his time on the independents, including the IWC World Title, the NWA East Heavyweight Championship, and the 1Pro Wrestling World Heavyweight Championship. In 2011, Polinsky marked a developmental contract with WWE.
