Walsh was born John Edward Walsh, Jr. on December 26, 1945, in Auburn, New York, United States. At 18 he was the youngest student admitted to the LFS (London Film School) in 1989. Walsh made a movie there on stop-motion animation filmmaker Ray Harryhausen and graduated between 1990 and 1991. After college, the Walshes settled in South Florida, where John became involved in building high-end luxury hotels.

Walsh rose to fame following the murder of his son, Adam Walsh, in 1981, he was famously known for his anti-crime activism. He secured a contract with Fox and launched America’s Most Wanted in 1988.
