NPR CEO Jarl Mohn announced that he is “stepping aside” in June 2019, at the end of his five-year term. He will take on the new role of president emeritus, NPR Foundation board member and co-chair of NPR’s 50th anniversary capital campaign, focusing on leading the public radio network’s fundraising drive and building relationships with donors “who believe in the importance of NPR’s fact-based journalism and want to invest in the next chapter in the network’s history,” according to a news release. Mohn announced that he and his wife Pamela will also contribute $10 million from their personal fortune toward the effort.
NPR says its board of directors will conduct a national search for NPR’s next president and CEO and that Mohn will remain in his current role through the end of his term and beyond as needed to ensure a smooth transition.
He became president and CEO of NPR in 2014, leading the net through four consecutive years of audience growth and budget surpluses. During his tenure, NPR’s newsmagazines attained their highest ratings in the network’s history while it has also become the top podcast publisher, the network says.
The NPR chief also endured a maelstrom of controversy in November 2017 after his alleged mishandling of allegations against former senior VP of news and editorial director Michael Oreske, who was ultimately fired. As the #MeToo movement was ramping up, two women told The Washington Post that Oreskes made unwanted physical contact while he was employed by The New York Times two decades ago. Mohn then asked for and accepted Oreske’s resignation, citing “inappropriate behavior.”
In a public apology to staffers, as Inside Radio reported, Mohn said, “I let you down. I should have acted faster and more decisively.” He then said that he would hire an outside law firm to “conduct a review of how we handled the matter.”
Mohn then took a medical leave of absence in December, a month later, related to a burst aorta he suffered earlier in the year that required him to undergo open-heart surgery. COO Loren Mayor managed day-to-day operations until his return in January. According to NPR.org, she “is seen by many managers and executives inside NPR as a strong potential internal candidate to replace Mohn” next year. He will remain in his role beyond June “as necessary to ensure a smooth transition.”
