She graduated from Austin High School in 1971 and then attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater in 1975.
After graduating from college, Mahaffey moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. She made her Broadway debut in 1977 in the musical Rex. She then went on to appear in a number of other Broadway productions, including The Elephant Man, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and The Crucible.
