Kmetko was born on February 16, 1953, in Cleveland, Ohio as the fifth of Rev. Andrew and Alice Gladys (née Newman) Kmetko’s five kids. In 1970, He graduated from William Howard Taft High School in Chicago, Illinois. Kmetko earned a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from Columbia College Chicago in 1976.

Kmetko started his journalism career as a weekend anchor and general assignment reporter for popular television station WAVE-TV in Louisville, Kentucky, and WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
