Gentleman Jack is a 2019 TV series. It is a drama series that premiered in April 2019. Thomas Howes is one of the cast in the series Gentleman Jack. In the series, he appears as John Booth. He is a cute fella who wants to marry a French maid who is pregnant.
Gentlemen Jack tells the story of a woman who had a passion for life and a mind for business, and bucked society’s expectations at every turn. It focuses on landowner Anne Lister, who is determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall. She means to do that by reopening the coal mines and marrying well.
The charismatic, single-minded, swashbuckling Lister – who dresses head-to-toe in black and charms her way into high society – has no intention of marrying a man. The story examines Lister’s relationships with her family, servants, tenants and industrial rivals, and, most importantly, her would-be wife.
Based on historical fact, the real-life Anne Lister’s story was recorded in the four million words of her diaries, and the most intimate details of her life, once hidden in a secret code, have been decoded and revealed for the series.
Thomas Howes Interview
Q: What in Yorkshire would you like to change?
Thomas Howes: Well, I only really see Donny these days, and I live in London most of the time, so from what I can see at the moment, nothing.
Q: A bit of Yorkshire countryside is just the job when you’ve been in the big smoke for a while.
Thomas Howes: Donny Lakeside is nice. Any Yorkshire scenery and greenery would do for me after the urban jungle of London!
Q: Do you miss the attitude of Northerners.
Thomas Howes: Instead of charging around with their heads down like in London, strangers say good morning to each other in the street as they do in France, and the buses have only one door so you have to say thank you to the driver as you go out. Northerners are such sociable people – perfect for actors to be around.
Q: What would you do if you had a spare £1 million?
Thomas Howes: Obviously I’d sort some treats and luxuries for myself, my family, and friends. After that, I’d give it all to charity. Who really needs £1 million?
Q: A few of your achievements that make you proud
Thomas Howes: Downton, obviously, but also started my career working for the National Theatre with The History Boys, because they were the first theatre I visited when I came to London.
I wrote and produced a new musical called Folk! The Musical for my dad is based on folk songs and dad’s ideas and philosophies about folk singing. The audience went mad for it, sang all the songs, laughed at all the jokes, and even ad-libbed. It was interactive, social theatre. Dad was there to see it, which was just wonderful.
Q: Your tipple of choice?
Thomas Howes: whisky.
Q: What shows do you watch?
Thomas Howes: I watch endless shows on telly; Homeland, Person of Interest, all those sorts of shows. I also watch lots of murder mysteries – it’s actually my genre of choice as a punter.
Q: Your hobbies or interests?
Thomas Howes: I’d never want to do anything else other than acting if I could possibly help it. I have other interests – writing, directing, music – but they’re all within the same ballpark.
I feel lucky to do my dream job, but as a kid, I was going to do loads of other stuff too; puppetry, magic, circuses, designing theme parks, all sorts. Now I have my own theatre company up in Donny, Diamond Theatre Company, so I get to mop up some of these by basing shows around them.
Q: Your treasured possession?
Thomas Howes: My most treasured possession is probably My Screen Actor’s Guild Award. But I would never put possessions over people. My family is the most important thing to me.
Q: Your favorite Yorkshire place?
Thomas Howes: Other than home, is the Doncaster Little Theatre. My first ever theatre and surely the theatre I’ve played the most over the years. They put on a great spread of shows throughout the year, and I still perform in many shows there between professional jobs.
Q: If you could swap places with one person for a day?
Thomas Howes: I guess it would be a royal. It would be nice to have all that privilege and luxury for a day! I’m a bit mischievous, so I’d probably do something controversial, like dancing a Charleston in front of the TV cameras.
Q: If you had a racehorse?
Thomas Howes: I’d call it Prospero.
Q: One of the things that makes you mad?
Thomas Howes: The price of theatre throughout the country. It’s such a rich man’s toy. It should be as accessible as television to people – a regular experience of social and communal interaction.
