Raines was chosen in the fifth round of the 1977 beginner draft by the Montreal Expos. During his first full season in the major associations in 1981, he batted .304 with 71 taken bases in a strike-abbreviated battle – charging fans with his speed.
He completed second in Rookie of the Year casting a ballot, nineteenth in MVP casting a ballot and earned his first All-Star choice.
