Nicky Oppenheimer Biography
Nicky Oppenheimer (Nicholas F. Oppenheimer) was born on 8th June 1945 in South Africa. He is a South African entreprenuer and philanthropist. He is the former Chairman of De Beers diamond mining company and Diamond Trading Company.
He was a student at Harrow School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics and took the Oxford MA.
Nicky Oppenheimer Career
In 1968 he joined the Anglo American Corporation and was appointed a director in 1974. In 2001 he resigned as the Deputy chairman but remained a non-executive director of the Anglo American board until 2011.
In 1984 he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the then Central Selling Organisation (now Diamond Trading Company). In 1985 he became the Deputy Chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mines.
In 1985 he was appointed the Chairman of the Diamond Trading Company. He became the Chairman of the De Beers Group in 1998 until 2012 when he retired and his family stake was sold to Anglo American.
Nicky Oppenheimer Awards
- 2003: Doctorate in Technology, honoris causa by the Technikon Witwatersrand in South Africa . He was the first recipient of such an honorary doctorate by the Technikon to a person in the public and private sector.
- 2004: Presidential Order of Honor from Mr. Festus Mogae, the former President of the Republic of Botswana.
- 2009: Honorary Fellowship from the London Business School.
Nicky Oppenheimer Family
He married Orcillia “Strilli” Lasch, daughter of industrial tycoon Helli Lasch in 1968.
