Brace Belden Career
Belden has identified as a Marxist since his adolescence, and he protested the Iraq War when he was thirteen years old. When he was fifteen, he and his friends formed Warkrime, a satirical right-wing, pro-war punk band. In the band, he went by the stage name President Chaos. Give War A Chance, their debut album was released in 2006, and the band disbanded in 2008.
Following Warkrime, Belden played bass in Wild Thing, a San Francisco-based punk band where he earned the moniker “‘Bad Boy’ Brace Belden.” Belden has stated that he “always worked shitty jobs” and that he “should have gone to college,” but added, “but a lot of good that did other guys.”
He worked as a florist at Brothers Papadopoulos flower shop in the San Francisco Bay Area after graduating from high school. In 2015, he started a petition to cancel A Prairie Home Companion, an American Public Media radio show.
According to the petition, “is a stupid, boring show that forces millions of radio listeners under the age of 60 to turn off their radios whenever that stupid old guy starts rambling. Everyone under the age of 100 should sign this.” Willamette Week interviewed Belden about his campaign before hiring him as a freelance music writer.
In September 2016, Willamette Week received a resignation email from Belden, saying that he had “accepted a position out of the country.” At age 19, Belden identified as a communist.
Time in Syria
In October of 2016, Belden arrived in Syria. He was trained at the YPG Academy, where he met other Western volunteers such as Lucas Chapman and Tommy Mrck. Belden was assigned as a machine gunner on a makeshift tank for the Raqqa campaign shortly after graduating from the Academy.
In mid-November, his unit assisted in the capture of Tal Saman. Brace stated “We pushed up to Tal Saman until we had a half-circle around it. Then we just bombarded it with shit.” Many refugees fled the town in search of safety behind the YPG front line, with Belden describing “hundreds of civilians coming across for days on end.”
His unit spent the night in whatever building they had just captured, camped out on rooftops in the cold. “It was awful the first week we were out,” Belden told Rolling Stone. Belden’s unit was withdrawn to Ayn Issa after capturing Tal Saman. Belden was nominated as a candidate for Rector of the University of Glasgow in March 2017.
In March 2017, Rolling Stone featured seven Western leftist volunteers, including Belden. Later, he described it as “Man, that’s pretty fucking ridiculous. They simply made up my biography. Which is a problem because I’ve done nothing but jack off before coming here.”
Later, it was announced that the Rolling Stone article would be made into a film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Daniel Espinosa, which Belden strongly opposed. The Department of Homeland Security investigated Belden and other “anarchist fighters” for “suspected or confirmed ANTIFA links” in August 2020.
Belden responded, “I am not now nor have I ever been a member of any antifa organization,” adding, “The US government has been spying on and smearing communists for 100 years, but they usually have the decency not to call a Red an anarchist!”
Unionization effort
In February 2018, Belden began working in San Francisco at Anchor Brewing Company, which had recently been purchased by Sapporo. As a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, specifically the local Marxist caucus Red Star, he became part of an eight-person organizing committee to form an employee’s union at his factory.
By early 2019, the unionization effort had gone public and was profiled in Jacobin magazine and an episode of Chapo Trap House. Workers at the brewery voted 31 to 16 in favor of unionizing, and they joined the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 6.
In August 2019, Senator Bernie Sanders spoke with Belden and other union activists about workplace democracy and labor issues.
