Chris Hayes MSNBC

Chris guest-hosted The Rachel Maddow Show in July 2010, while Maddow was traveling in Afghanistan and often filled in for Maddow when she was absent. He has also hosted other MSNBC shows such as The Ed Show, Countdown With Keith Olbermann and The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.

MSNBC, on November 5, 2010, announced that Chris would be filling in for Keith Olbermann during Olbermann’s suspension but the network later backtracked after finding out that Chris had also made political contributions on the issue over which Olbermann was being suspended. Chris credits Maddow with his becoming a host at MSNBC.

Up With Chris Hayes

On August 1, 2011, MSNBC announced that Chris would host a two-hour morning show on Saturdays and Sundays, each going into depth on current issues. The first airing of the show, Up with Chris Hayes was September 17, 2011, and it featured a live interview with former speaker and current House minority leader Nancy Pelosi.

On May 27, 2012, Memorial Day Weekend, Chris made comments on air regarding the use of the word “heroism” as applied to American servicemen killed in action, stating, “I feel uncomfortable about the word because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war.

“And I don’t want to obviously desecrate or disrespect the memory of anyone that’s fallen, and obviously there are individual circumstances in which there is genuine, tremendous heroism, you know, a hail of gunfire, rescuing fellow soldiers, and things like that. But it seems to me that we marshal this word in a way that is problematic. But maybe I’m wrong about that.”

This remark generated widespread controversy and Chris initially defended his comment by urging people to listen to what he had actually said. He nonetheless, apologized on his blog and furthermore, on his June 2, 2012, show, Chris devoted a discussion to his comments and the disconnect between civilians and the military.

MSNBC All In With Chris Hayes Show

MSNBC, on March 14, 2013, announced that Chris would take over the time slot formerly hosted by Ed Schultz, who would move to the weekends. Being 34 years old, Chris became the youngest host of a prime-time show on any of the country’s major cable news channels.

According to The New York Times, the change was made in the hopes that MSNBC could win a wider audience than it did with Schultz. Chris was said to transition better to The Rachel Maddow Show because he is seen as just as policy-oriented as Maddow. The show premiered on Monday, April 1, 2013. It later won an Emmy in 2015 and 2018.

Chris Hayes Book

Chris has two books;

  • Twilight of the Elites (2012)
  • A Colony in a Nation (2017)

All In Chris Hayes Podcast

In May 2018, Hayes propelled a week by week podcast called Why Is This Happening? highlighting interviews with political figures, activists, columnists, journalists, and scholastics. The podcast’s first live scene was recorded in November 2018, at Congregation Beth Elohim, in Brooklyn, New York, with creator Ta-Nehisi Coates. Hayes’ second live scene, hung on February 24, 2019, highlighted a meeting with Georgia lawmaker and extremist, Stacey Abrams.

Chris Hayes A Colony In A Nation

A Colony In A Nation is Chris’s second book. In the book, Chris talks about matters on the national conversation on policing and democracy. Drawing on wide-ranging historical, social, and political analysis, as well as deeply personal experiences with law enforcement, Chris contends that the USA has fractured in two: the Colony and the Nation.

In the Nation, the law is venerated and in the Colony, fear and order undermine civil rights. With great empathy, he seeks to understand this systemic divide, examining its ties to racial inequality, the omnipresent threat of guns, and the dangerous and unfortunate results of choices made by fear.
