Bonderman was born on 27 November 1942, in Los Angeles, California. He was born to a Jewish family and attended University High School in Los Angeles. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Washington in 1963 and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1966.
During his time at Harvard, Bonderman traveled to Cairo, Egypt, to study Islamic Legal Jurisprudence and Law, and became proficient in various Islamic legal cliques developing a near-native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic.

Bonderman’s rise to fame began with his work as a lawyer. After graduating from Harvard Law School, he joined the Arnold & Porter law firm in Washington, D.C., and specialized in corporate, securities, bankruptcy, and antitrust litigation.
