David Crosby Biography
David Crosby is an American singer-songwriter. He was a founding member of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Crosby joined the Byrds in 1964. The band gave songwriter his 1st favorite hit in Apr 1965 with “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Harry Lillis Crosby appeared on the Byrds’ 1st 5 albums and created the initial lineup’s 1973 reunion album.
He attended several schools, including the University Elementary School in Los Angeles, the Crane Country Day School in Montecito, and Laguna Blanca School in Santa Barbara for the rest of his elementary school and junior high.
He graduated from the Cate School in Carpinteria, completing his secondary studies by correspondence. Crosby briefly studied drama at Santa Barbara City College before dropping out to pursue a career in music.
In 1967 he joined Buffalo Springfield on stage at the Monterey Pop Festival, which contributed to his dismissal from the Byrds. He subsequently formed Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968 with Stephen Stills (of Buffalo Springfield) and Graham Nash of the Hollies. After the release of their debut album, CSN won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1969.
Neil Young joined the cluster for live appearances, their second concert being Woodstock, before recording their second album Déjà Vu. Meant to be a group that could collaborate freely, Crosby and Nash recorded three gold albums in the 1970s, while the core trio of CSN remained active from 1976 until 2016. CSNY reunions took place in each decade from the 1970s through the 2000s.
Songs Harry Lillis Crosby wrote or co-wrote embrace “Lady Friend”, “Why”, and “Eight Miles High” with the Byrds and “Guinnevere”, “Wooden Ships”, “Shadow Captain”, and “In My Dreams” with Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Crosby wrote, “Almost Cut My Hair” and the title track “Déjà Vu” for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 1970 album. Known for his use of alternate guitar tunings and jazz influences, the singer has released six solo albums, five of which have charted. He fashioned a jazz-influenced trio together with his son James Raymond and guitar player Jeff Pevar in resuscitation.
Crosby’s work with the Byrds and CSN (Y) has sold over 35 million albums. Crosby got inducted into the Rock-and-roll Hall of Fame twice: once for his add the Byrds and once more for his work with CSN.
The Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time includes five albums which he contributed, three with the Byrds and two with CSN (Y). He is outspoken and depicts as emblematic of the 1960s’ counterculture.
Crosby joined forces with a black singer Terry Callier in Chicago. Together they headed off the NYC Greenwich Village scene in search of a recording contract but it seems that the USA was not ready for a black and white folk duo. Crosby joined the Les Baxter’s Balladeers around 1962. With the help of producer Jim Dickson, Crosby recorded his first solo session in 1963.
In 1971, Crosby released his first solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name, featuring contributions by Nash, Young, Joni Mitchell, and members of Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, and Santana. As a duo, Crosby & Nash (C&N) have released four studio albums and two live albums, including Another Stoney Evening. The albums feature the duo in a 1971 acoustic performance with no supporting band.
In January 2014, Crosby released his first solo album in 20 years, Cruz, recorded in close collaboration with his son James Raymond (of CPR) at the latter’s home studio. Crosby and Raymond recorded some of the songs at Raymond’s home studio and then moved to Jackson Browne’s Groove Masters studio in Santa Monica for tunes that feature the full band.
Crosby released a new solo album (his fifth one) named Lighthouse on 21 October 2016. Lighthouse received praise from outlets including Rolling Stone, Stereogum, and NPR Music – which was preceded by 2014’s Croz, Crosby’s first solo album in 20 years.
In Crosby’s unparalleled six-decade career, the native Californian has created songs that resonate as indelible cultural touchstones for more than three generations, not only as a solo artist but as a founding member of The Byrds in the mid-60s, Crosby, Stills & Nash (recipients of the Grammy for best new artist in 1969), and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. He’s collaborated with dozens of artists, including Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, Phil Collins, Elton John, and Carole King.
The folk-rock pioneer, who was inducted into the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2009, has also served as our social conscience, not only eloquently writing about societal issues on such songs as “Almost Cut My Hair” and “Wooden Ships,” but continuously donating concert proceeds to likeminded causes. His towering influence and brilliant ability to capture the spirit of our times in his music remains undiminished.

David Crosby Documentary: Remember My Name
The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019. The title is a play on the name of Crosby’s 1971 album If I Could Only Remember My Name If I Could Only Remember My Name. He’s influenced the life of Cameron Crowe. It was 1976 when he first interviewed the musician, and Crowe was an 18-year-old wunderkind of Rolling Stone. Now Crowe is 62 years old, and he says “David”
David Crosby: Remember My Name mostly lets Crosby tell how his rehab didn’t happen in a straight line. But the sartorial lapse we glimpse in that clip is funny, shocking, and telling, and not just in exposing that where pop stars are concerned, wardrobe makes the man. In that moment, unfortified by his hippie trappings, Crosby reverts to the awkward, ignored child he was forever trying to transcend.
