1999-2003
In 1999, he began his coaching career with the Orlando Magic, where he coached for more than 4 NBA seasons. In 2000, he won the Coach of the Year award after his first year with the Magic.

He spent a year working as a commentator for the NBA on ABC before he was hired by the Boston Celtics as their head coach in 2004. The Los Angeles Clippers acquired Rivers from the Celtics for an unprotected 2015 NBA first-round draft pick on June 25, 2013. He became the senior vice president of the basketball operations on the team.
Rivers led the Clippers to a franchise-record of 57 wins, garnering the third seed in the Western Conference during his first season as Clipper’s head coach. He was later promoted to the President of basketball operations in conjunction with his continuing head coaching duties on June 16, 2014.
