Inside the Making of Sea Wall/A Life With Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge
In Broadway’s Sea Wall/A Life, Jake Gyllenhaal—the movie star who’s recently been transforming himself in movies like Nightcrawler or Spider-Man: Far From Home—does something that feels new in its simplicity. His performance in the monologue A Life is intimate and character-free, playing a man facing the parallels between the death of his father and the birth of his newborn child (neither of which, it should be noted, Gyllenhaal has experienced firsthand).
“The work that I always try and do is very, very detailed,” says director Carrie Cracknell, who worked with both Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge, who performs the play’s first monologue, Sea Wall. “We talk a lot about the moment to moment, and I think what we constructed was a set of shared aims about the aesthetic of performance and the fact that we wanted it to feel very naturalistic.”
Cracknell recalls the rehearsal process—seen here in these exclusive photos provided to Vanity Fair—as a sort of “mania,” a period of exploring, reimagining, and playing, despite the grim subject matter. (Sturridge plays a father and husband who’s left facing down his grief after a family holiday takes a tragic turn). The production debuted in a limited, sold-out run at the Public Theater earlier this year, and opened in previews at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre last week. “It was often just me and one of the actors, and it would sort of veer between total hysteria—I mean, genuinely—and kind of hilariously, and almost stand-up.
They would be—both of them, particularly Jake—playing and kind of doing stupid voices and dancing around the room, and then would sort of drop in to this very, very emotionally vulnerable work,” Cracknell explains. “It was interesting because I think we were trying to hold this duality the whole time about it being really funny—elements of it are like stand-up. And then it’s touching something really real. There was this constant sense of exploration.”
She recalls how Gyllenhaal at one point tested his entire monologue at a stand-up mic; Sturridge once came in and played a whole piano set before getting to work for the day. There was even a week when Gyllenhaal’s dog, Leo, was proposed as a costar.
